How can I check if I am registered?

Log in to Events.com, click on your name from top navigation bar and click "My Events."  This page will show all of the events you are registered for. You can also email hello@events.com to request a confirmation email.

What are the 2018 registration fees?

Are there time limits?

Yes.  For the half marathon you must be able to complete the course in 3 hours. This means you must maintain a 13:44-minute-per-mile pace or faster.  For the 5K, you must be able to complete the course in 1 hour. This means you must maintain a 19:21-minute-per-mile pace or faster.

Both the half marathon and 5K time limits are based on chip time, meaning the time limit countdown begins the moment the participant's timing chip passes over the start line timing mat.

What do I receive with my paid entry fee?

Each half marathon and 5K participant will receive:

  • Personalized bib number and timing tag
  • A short-sleeve, top-quality, technical fabric men's or women's race shirt
  • A souvenir cinch bag
  • Support stations throughout the course
  • Custom finisher's medal
  • Finish line treats including chocolate milk, water and finisher food bag filled with delicious recovery snacks
  • Finish line festival with live band, refreshments and local vendors
  • A complimentary beer at the finish line beer garden (21 & up only, until supplies last)

What are the race distances?

Half marathon - 13.1 miles
5K - 3.1 miles

Do any charities benefit from this event?

Yes!  Kiwanis Club of La Jolla raises over two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000) a year through the La Jolla Half Marathon and the funds are used specifically to address the needs of children in our wider community. Learn more here.

Can walkers do the 5K or half marathon?

Yes; however, for the half marathon you must be able to complete the course in 3 hours. This means you must maintain a 13:44-minute-per-mile pace or faster.  For the 5K, you must be able to complete the course in 1 hour. This means you must maintain a 19:21-minute-per-mile pace or faster. Learn more about the course and view course map here.

What amenities are offered on the half marathon course?

Fully staffed and equipped water stations will be positioned along the course approximately every mile (2, 3, 4, 5.5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.5 and 12) with plenty of water and portable toilets.  Grape Ultima Replenisher will also be served at approximately miles 2, 3, 5.5, 7, 8, 10 and 12.  Please note that we are no longer permitted to have a support station inside Torrey Pines State Park.  There will still be one before and one after exiting the park.

Is there a VIP Package?

Yes! The Jewel Experience is available for purchase with your registration and includes: VIP parking near finish line festival, private, latest departure shuttle bus to start with restrooms and snacks on board (bananas and energy bars), private gear check drop-off at the start and pickup at VIP tent at the finish line with post-race refreshments, and massages. Package is limited to 50 participants max per year.

How do I switch from the 5K to the half marathon or vice versa?

To switch from the half marathon to the 5K, you may keep your same bib number and start your race from the 5K start area. There is no refund for the price difference. You will get an official 5K time once you cross the finish line.

Follow these instructions to switch from the 5K to the half marathon. NOTE: You must do this before the half marathon sells out and you will need to pay the difference between what you initially paid for your 5K entry and the current half marathon entry fee, plus the applicable processing fee.

How do I get my bib number, timing tag and race shirt?

You must pick up your race shirt, bib number and timing tag at La Jolla Half Marathon Expo on Friday and Saturday during regular expo hours (Friday, April 20 from 12p.m. to 6p.m. and Saturday, April 21 from 10a.m. to 5p.m.Be prepared to show your photo ID to claim your bib number. Nothing will be mailed, and while we will do all we can to ensure you receive the shirt size you request, unfortunately we cannot make any guarantees.

IMPORTANT: If you’re unable to attend the expo to pick up your bib number, race shirt and ¼ zip, be sure to select the Race Day Pickup option and pay the additional $20 convenience fee when you register. If you've already registered and want to add the Race Day Pickup,you can log in to Events.com and add it to your registration. If you do not already have an Events.com account, you will need to create one using these easy instructions. Anyone attempting to pick up their bib number on race day who hasn't paid the $20 fee will be required to pay onsite (cash or credit card accepted). Race day bib pickup will be available starting at the following times:

Half Marathon: 6 to 6:45 a.m.
5K: 5:30 to 6:30 a.m.

Are there shuttles available on race day?

Yes.  Shuttles will run to and from the half marathon start, 5K start and finish festival area.  Click here for shuttle and parking details.

What is the refund policy?

All entry fees are NONREFUNDABLE, NONTRANSFERABLE* and NONDEFERRABLE with the following exceptions ONLY:

Active duty military members who are unable to participate because they are unexpectedly deployed may choose to either defer their entry to the following year's race or receive a refund less a $15 administration fee. Email request with a copy of orders to info@inmotionevents.com no later than 10 days prior to event day.

What is the transfer policy?

The transfer period will be available from April 9 - April 13, 2018 and only applies to the half marathon. During this timeframe only, you will be able to log into your Events.com account and transfer your entry to someone else. For help logging into your Events.com account, please review this helpful article. There is a $20 transfer fee and registered participants are responsible for finding transferees and making sure transfers are completed prior to the deadline. Transfers must be completed by midnight on April 13, 2018.

Participating with a bib number and timing tag not officially assigned to you is not permitted. If race officials discover that this has occurred, you and the original registered participant will be banned from this event and future
Half Marathon Triple Crown events.

Is someone who is not registered allowed to run the course, even if they don't take a medal?

NO - if a runner is seen without a bib number while running on the course, they will be removed from the course for safety and security reasons.

Will medals be presented to half marathon and 5K finishers?

Yes! Finisher medals will be awarded to half marathon and 5K finishers, upon completion of the race in the finish line chute. Participants who are disqualified because they were not able to complete the event in the specified time limits are excluded (see "Are there course time limits?" above).

Will there be pace groups and what are they?

Yes, there will be pace groups provided by Road Runner Sports.  Pace group leaders run a steady pace throughout the race so members of their group are able to finish the half marathon in the projected finish time for that group.  Pace groups with the following target finish times will be offered (times are subject to change):  1:30, 1:35, 1:40, 1:45, 1:50, 2:00, 2:10, 2:20, 2:30 and 2:45. What is the policy for the use of headphones during the race?

For your safety and the safety of your fellow participants, you are encouraged NOT to use iPods, MP3 players, or similar devices during the race. However, if you choose to use such a device, it is recommended that you keep the volume at a level at which you are aware of your environment, can hear course directions and any emergency situations which may arise.

Will there be timing clocks or split time callers on the course?

No.  Since we implement a wave start for the half marathon, there are no timing clocks or split time callers on the course. If you're interested in tracking your time on race day, plan to wear or carry your GPS/timing device.

Is the La Jolla Half Marathon USAT&F sanctioned?

Yes. The La Jolla Half Marathon is run on a certified and sanctioned course.

What are the categories for age group awards?

Awards will be offered to the top three finishers, male and female,  in both the 5K and half marathon in the following age groups: 17 & under, 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80+. If you’re an age group winner, your award will be mailed to you one to two weeks after the event.

The top three overall male and female 5K and half marathon finishers will also receive a special award, which will be presented on race day on the main stage in the finish festival. Awards will be presented for the 5K at 9:00 a.m. and for the half marathon at 10 a.m. A $1,000 cash award will be given to the first male and female who break the half marathon course record set in 2012 by Sergio Reyes (1:06:23.2) and in 1990 by Erin Baker (1:16:52).

Note: Awards will be based on net chip time and prize money will be based on clock time.

What is the average weather on race day?

50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit at the start warming by 15 to 20 degrees by noon.

When will the results be posted?

Results will be available race day and posted at the finish line area. Results will also be available online.

What is the Half Marathon Triple CrownSM and how do I qualify for it?

The Half Marathon Triple CrownSM Series is a fun opportunity to recognize dedicated athletes who commit to complete a trio of scenic Southern California half marathons within the same calendar year. The threesome includes the Carlsbad Marathon/Half Marathon, the La Jolla Half Marathon and the America's Finest City Half Marathon. Learn more here!

Are strollers allowed?

Due to steep downhills on both the half marathon and 5K courses, strollers are not allowed in either event.

Are dogs allowed?

Though we love animals, dogs or pets of any kind are not allowed at the race or the expo.

Is there a minimum age requirement for the half marathon?

Although there is no official minimum age requirement for the half marathon, we recommend all half marathon participants be at least 12 years old on race day. All participants under 18 must have their event waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian. In addition, we recommend everyone under 16 years of age on race day be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian (who is also registered for the event) during his/her participation.

What is the policy on racing chairs or handcycles in the half marathon or 5K?

Due to steep downhills on both the half marathon and 5K courses, racing chairs or handcycles are not allowed for safety reasons.

Why did my GPS device record a distance greater than 13.1 miles for the half marathon course?

The half marathon course is certified using USA Track & Field course measurement criteria employing the use of an Alan Jones counter. The course is measured along the shortest distance between the start line and finish line, which entails taking the straight line tangent on all curves. It is virtually impossible for anyone to run the course exactly as measured, even the front runners.

A GPS device measures distance wherever you go during the race. If you go to the side of the road to a water station, the GPS records this extra distance. If you zig-zag around other runners in the first few miles, the GPS measures the extra distance. Wherever you do not run the short line tangent in the road, the additional distance you cover is measured by the GPS. A GPS device worn in a race will always record a distance greater than an accurately measured course.

Is there any type of insurance offered for my entry?

Yes, registration insurance is available for purchase during the checkout process through TicketGuardian. If you can't attend this event for any of the fifteen (15) covered reasons, you will be reimbursed for your whole registration cost and processing fees, excluding the insurance premium per the insurance company’s guidelines. The insurance charge is in addition to the cost of your registration and will be billed separately by TicketGuardian. If you purchased insurance and need to submit a claim, you will need to contact TicketGuardian here. Claims must be filed no later than (72) hours after the start of the event or (60) days from the date of loss; whichever time limit occurs first. 

If you have already registered for the event and would like to purchase insurance separately, you can do so here.  Insurance must be purchased at least 24 hours before the event start time.
