Event Course

The race starts at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and runs along a scenic coastal route before reaching the challenging climb to the summit of Torrey Pines State Park. After leaving the park, the course rolls atop Torrey Pines mesa, continues down through the residential district of La Jolla Shores, and finishes in Ellen Browning Scripps Park at La Jolla Cove.

Course Time Limit

There is a 3-hour time limit (based on chip time) for finishing this event. All participants must be able to maintain a 13:44-minute-mile pace or faster throughout the event.

Wave Start

We use a multi-wave start and your bib number will have your wave number on it. Everyone, regardless of his or her indicated wave number, must be at the race start line when the gun goes off at 7:00 a.m.

Course Support

Fully staffed and equipped water stations will be positioned along the course approximately every mile (2, 3, 4, 5.5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.5 and 12) with plenty of water and portable toilets. Grape Ultima Replenisher will also be served at approximately miles 2, 3, 5.5, 7, 8, 10 and 12.  Please note that we are no longer permitted to have a support station inside Torrey Pines State Park.  There will still be one before and one after exiting the park.

VIP Experience

The Jewel Experience is available for purchase with your registration and includes: VIP parking near finish line festival, private, latest departure shuttle bus to start with restrooms and snacks on board (bananas and energy bars), private gear check drop-off at the start and pick up at VIP tent at the finish line with post-race refreshments, and massages. Package is limited to 50 participants max per year.

If you experience a medical problem on the course, go to the nearest water station where a medical representative will be called to assist you. If you are unable to finish the race, shuttle transportation back to the finish can also be called from every water station. Race Guards trained in CPR and first aid will also be out on the course.

There will be a medical tent in the secure, fenced-in finish chute, just beyond the finish line.

Pace Groups 

Complimentary Pace Groups will be provided by Road Runner Sports.  Pace group leaders run a steady pace throughout the race so members of their group are able to finish the half marathon in the projected finish time for that group.  Pace groups with the following target finish times will be offered (times are subject to change): 1:30, 1:35, 1:40, 1:45, 1:50, 2:00, 2:10, 2:15, 2:20, 2:30 and 2:45.

Bib Number and Shirt Pickup


You must pick up your race shirt, bib number and timing tag at La Jolla Half Marathon Expo on Friday and Saturday during regular expo hours (Friday, April 20 from 12p.m. to 6p.m. and Saturday, April 21 from 10a.m. to 5p.m.Be prepared to show your photo ID to claim your bib number. Nothing will be mailed, and while we will do all we can to ensure you receive the shirt size you request, unfortunately we cannot make any guarantees.

IMPORTANT: If you’re unable to attend the expo to pick up your bib number, race shirt and ¼ zip, be sure to select the Race Day Pickup option and pay the additional $20 convenience fee when you register. If you've already registered and want to add the Race DayPickup,you can log in to and add it to your registration. If you do not already have an account, you will need to create one using these easy instructions. Anyone attempting to pick up their bib number on race day who hasn't paid the $20 fee will be required to pay onsite (cash or credit card accepted). Race day bib pickup will be available starting at the following times:

Half Marathon: 6 to 6:45 a.m. 
5K: 5:30 to 6:30 a.m.

Timing and Race Results

We use ChronoTrack's B-Tag timing system to score our event. Official results and age group awards will be based on your chip time (net time on the course). Course record cash awards will be based on gun time. All runners must attach the timing device as instructed or they will not be timed and ineligible for any award. Results will be posted in the finish line area and also after the race on our website.

Race Day Parking and Shuttles

Race day parking is available at the Del Mar Racetrack; however, it will be VERY BUSY! Delays getting in are guaranteed. Be sure to give yourself an extra thirty to forty-five minutes travel time before the race. We also strongly suggest you carpool if possible. You may also park at the La Jolla Cove and take a shuttle from the Cove to the start line at the Del Mar Racetrack. These shuttles will run from 4:30 to 5:30 a.m. Please note that the last shuttle leaves the Cove promptly at 5:30 a.m.

Race Day Gear Check

You may check your gear on race morning at both the half marathon and 5K start lines at the Gear Check area.

All checked gear must fit into on 11" x 16" bag which will be supplied by the race.  You may not check any backpacks or duffle bags. Don’t pack valuables and keep in mind the race organizers are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Bags may be claimed after your race from the Gear Pickup tent at the finish line. Do not discard gear at the start line. All items left at the start line, on the course or not claimed on race day from the Gear Pickup tent will be donated to local shelters. Any bags left unattended will be removed by security.

The Finish

The race finishes at the La Jolla Cove. Click here for driving directions. After your race enjoy post-race festivities including live music and a beer garden for participants age 21 and older with proper ID. An awards presentation will take place at 9:30 a.m.

Post Race Shuttles

Post race shuttles will run from the La Jolla Cove to the Del Mar Racetrack from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Please note: due to traffic, shuttles may take up to an hour or more to get from the Cove to the Del Mar Racetrack.

All finisher’s who complete the race in 3 hours or less (based on chip time) will be presented a finisher’s medal at the finish line. The top three overall male and female half marathon finishers will also receive a special award, which will be presented at 10 a.m. on race day on the main stage in the finish festival.

Additionally, age group awards are also given. If you’re an age group winner, your award will be mailed to you approximately 3 weeks following the event. Awards will be offered to the first three finishers, male and female,  in the following age groups: 17 & under, 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80+.

A $1,000 cash award will be given to the first male and female who break the course record set in 2012 by Sergio Reyes (1:06:23.2) and in 1990 by Erin Baker (1:16:52).


All entry fees are NONREFUNDABLE and NONTRANSFERABLE with the following exceptions ONLY:

Active duty military members who are unable to participate because they are unexpectedly deployed may request a refund less a $15 administration fee. Email request with a copy of orders to no later than 10 days prior to event day.

There will be a transfer period available from April 9, 2018 to April 13, 2018 at which time any registered participant may transfer his or her entry to another person. To transfer a confirmed entry, the new registrant must complete and return the transfer form and letter of authorization from the previous registrant along with a transfer fee of $20. Please note that we do not not maintain a wait list. The registered participant is responsible for finding the transferee and making sure the transfer is completed prior to the deadline. Transfer form will be available for download here closer to the event date.

Participating with a bib number and timing tag not officially assigned to you is not permitted. If race officials discover that this has occurred, you and the original registered participant will be banned from this event and future Triple Crown events.
